Staying Safe at Camber Sands

Camber Sands is a beautiful beach, but the sea here demands respect. Understanding the tides and following safety advice is essential.

Key Hazards

  • Fast incoming tides: The tide at Camber comes in quickly and can catch people off guard on the sandbars. Always check tide times before your visit.
  • Sandbars and channels: At low tide, ridges of sand form. As the tide rises, water fills the channels between them and you can become cut off. Never turn your back on an incoming tide.
  • Currents: Strong currents exist near the harbour entrance at the western end. Stay well clear of this area.
  • Clothing: Always wear proper swimwear. Wet normal clothes become heavy and can drag you under.

Lifeguards & Flags

RNLI lifeguards patrol Camber Sands during summer, typically late May to early September, 10am to 6pm daily.

Red/yellow flags: swim and bodyboard here
Black/white chequered: surf craft and kayaks
Red flag: danger, do not enter the water
Orange windsock: offshore winds, no inflatables

Lost children wristbands are available from lifeguards and the coastal office.
